Manufacturing materials handling
Equipment Since 1927
Phelps Industries employs approximately 50 employees each certified or skilled in his/her position.
Each employee is a US citizen or a legal documented worker. Phelps Industries takes pride in knowing that our equipment is fabricated in the USA; by a lawful employee who makes a fair wage and is offered benefits. The early years focused on pneumatic loading systems. In the early 1970’s Phelps Industries expanded in the manufacturing of truck dumpers, various hoppers and hydraulic power units. Hydraulic telescopic cylinders became a part of our offerings in 1980.
At the present time,
Phelps Industries employs over 40 people and has more than 950 dumpers in service all across the United States and 29 other countries.

Quality of Work
Phelps Industries also utilizes certified welders and machinists. Each shop is Code Certified to AWS D 1.1. The cylinder shop primarily uses Submerged Arc Welding and Gas Metal Arc Welding with a 95-Ar/5-02 gas mixture spray transfer. The fabrication shop uses Flux Cored Arc Welding with a CO2 shield for most structural fabrication. All welders working on a project are certified for the weld they are applying. As welders are added to staff, certifications are pursued.
Products
Equipment manufactured by Phelps Industries include: Truck Dumpers with a variety of lengths and options; Semi-Portable, and Fully Portable Truck Dumpers; Receiving Hoppers with moving floor (Corn Hopper), drag chain or screw bottom floor options; Portable Landfill Tippers; Reclaimers; Up-ending Container Loaders/Unloaders; Large Telescopic and Rod Cylinders and Hydraulic Power Units designed to meet the application. We also engineer and fabricate custom equipment designed to meet the specialty needs of our customers. Our years of experience in design, development and manufacturing assure you of the finest products at the most competitive prices. Our goals are clear in our company and its’ industry. We manufacture rugged dependable equipment and follow up with comprehensive service.
Capabilities
Phelps Industries has a Registered Profession Engineer on staff as well as a technical staff who has been designing and building the dumpers, hydraulic systems and large telescopic cylinders for over 20 years. Our President, Ivo Phelps, has been designing and building heavy industrial equipment for over 40 years. We use computer aided design programs including finite element design. All prints are drawn on Auto CAD 2004. All of our engineering staff spends time in the field as well as in the office. This includes the manufacturing process, start up, as well as troubleshooting. We also are involved with a few companies that can offer our dumper and hopper installations as a turn-key project.

Design
Philosophy
Phelps Industries, Inc. is a unique company in that our focus is specifically on truck dumpers/tippers. We have been manufacturing our own telescopic cylinders designed specifically for truck dumpers since 1980.
Our philosophy is to build a dumper that is designed to lift the load, as if no product is emptying from the trailer. This means that the dumper is raising its lifting capacity throughout the tilt cycle. Therefore, the supplied motor horsepower, pump output, and cylinders are sized with that service factor taken into consideration. This philosophy leads to a unit with a longer life span and better safety rating, and safety factor.
Our engineering guidelines lead us to use the proper platform construction, larger diameter cylinder sizing and related pivot radius (the distance between the pivot point of the platform and the cylinders attachment points). The pivot radius is an important factor in design because it directly relates to the fatigue rating of the platform. Because we manufacture our own large telescopic cylinders we can set the pivot radius to achieve the desired lifting capacity (weight that a dumping platform can raise) and design life of the dumper. We state this point, because other manufacturers in the market, tend to mention only the platform construction, as though that is the only factor to consider in the entire dumper design. We believe that the longer this pivot radius, along with proper dumper construction, will lower the pressures seen on the hydraulic system and give you platform with less bending moment/better rigidity.
We challenge anyone to compare our finished dumper weigh to our competitors.
Phelps Industries, Inc. has been building dumping platforms for over 40 years, while constantly updating our designs and listening to the input of our clients to improve design. Throughout this period, we have had dumpers that exceed their life span, and are still in use today. This simply reflects on our design philosophy. We have dumpers that are still in use for their applications since the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Phelps Industries does consider itself a custom dumper manufacturer. This also separates Phelps Industries in this niche market. Phelps Industries can fabricate different lengths of dumper platforms.. The lengths of a dumper platform are determined by the length of the trailer or truck and trailer.
We do not tell you what you need, we can build to suit your request. If you feel your need is a bit different and needs certain specifications, we are willing to achieve your request. We can custom build a platform based on a specific need or product that is to be unloaded. We are flexible and purpose driven for every client.
After we manufacture our units, they are “test assembled” in our plant in Little Rock, Arkansas. Others may have their manufacturing outsourced. We welcome visits by clients to view their equipment during the manufacturing process.
